Maths

Year 3 have been making 3D shapes from nets.

Year 4 have been finding different types of triangles in the playground.

Maths provides a foundation for understanding the world and is essential to everyday life. At St Michael's, our children are given lots of exciting and practical opportunities to build an enjoyment of the subject and develop curiosity about the world around them.

We aim to ensure that all children:

  • Secure basic number skills (place value, x tables, calculations)
  • Develop their mathematical language
  • Apply good mathematical skills to solving problems.

At Key Stage One, the focus is upon developing confidence with mental strategies in number, place value and counting with whole numbers.

The main areas of study are:

  • Number, Place Value and Ordering
  • The Four Operations: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions
  • Measures: Time, Money, Length, Mass and Capacity
  • Shape and Geometry
  • Statistics (Year 2 only)

At Key Stage Two, the focus is to develop fluency with number and develop written methods of calculations e.g column addition. Children will focus on memorising times tables up to 12 x12 to aid other areas of mathematics and build links. Eventually, children will be expected to make connections with other areas of mathematics such as fractions, decimals and percentages.

The main areas of study are:

  • Number, Place Value and Ordering
  • The Four Operations: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions
  • Measures: Time, Money, Length, Mass and Capacity
  • Shape and Geometry
  • Statistics
  • Algebra, Ratio and Proportion (Year 6 only)

Please see the overviews below for details on the programmes of study for each year group.

Maths Websites
Maths Websites

We have purchased a subscription to an online website called Sumdog. Login details have been given out for children in KS2 to access games at home and at school. Please see your child's class teacher if you would like a reminder of their unique username and password. Children use the Sumdog website as part of their maths and ICT time at the beginning of the day. Awards will be given out in KS2 celebration assembly for those working hard on the Sumdog website.

In addition, we have recently set up a subscription to an online homework website called MyMaths which can be accessed by a unique username and password. It will be used in KS2 to practise targets and written methods of calculation. It is used in some of our local primary and secondary schools. Years 4, 5 and 6 have all been given details on how to access this website. Year 3 will be introduced to this new website after Christmas.

Useful website games to help with learning.
