Collective Worship during the Lockdown

During the new lockdown period (January 2021) we will continue with our Collective Worship/Assembly programme. This is central to the life of the school. We will also be making resources available for children at home (see below). Our programme is:

Monday: Whole school assembly introducing the theme of the week

Tuesday: Follow-up class assemblies

Wednesday: Assembly led by St Michael's Church joining the zoom call

Thursday: Class assemblies with a story OR ISingPop

Friday: Celebration Assemblies. We are giving out certificates to children using zoom

We have been using this blessing: it is a fabulous video!

Collective Worship is a time to focus on God and His love for us, to worship Him with songs and dances, to learn from the Bible, to reflect on the teaching and to pray together. It is a colourful, vibrant and enjoyable part of school life.

Collective Worship forms part of every assembly. Assemblies happen every day:

Whole school assemblies on the theme for the week.

KS1 Singing Assembly

KS2 Class Assemblies

Visiting speaker from St Michael’s Church or actors performing ‘Open the Book’plays.

 KS2 Singing        Assemblies

 KS1 Class    Assemblies.

Recommendation Assemblies - recognizing and rewarding effort and achievement.

Music and flag waving herald the beginning and mark the end of the assemblies. Songs can be accompanied by actions for all to join in or streamer dances. A candle is lit in Monday’s assemblies for the times of reflection.

In Class Assemblies children have the chance to be more involved than they can be in the halls; the smaller number of people present makes it conducive to asking questions and having discussions. The chance to revisit the material in a different context helps the children to further engage with it and work out how it applies to them.

Once a month the 'Open the Book' team from church act out one of the stories from the Bible. They are taking us through the main stories in chronological order using the most amazing props such as a Goliath that was seven feet tall and a giant whale big enough to swallow a man. These assemblies are greatly enjoyed by the children.

Children talk and write comments about what they have learnt and their thoughts and ideas on the theme for the term.

Themes for this year:

Term 1 - Creation and Creativity           Term 2 - Joy                                    Term 3 - Care and Compassion

Term 4 - Friendship and Peace              Term 5 - Humility and Service        Term 6 - Jesus the Light of the World

Term 1

Creation and Creativity

In this theme we considere the beauty of creation  The children produce beautiful pieces of art based on the natural world and also consider what they would do to look after the environment.

Term 2

  Joy

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.”

Romans 15:13

Our focus for this theme is the joy of giving, as well as they joy we feel in our everyday lives.

Last year we collected five crates of food for the foodbank.

Remembrance Day

We remember those who lost their lives in wars. Last year, during the week before Remembrance Day we made clay and paper poppies. The paper ones we put on the mural in the Small Hall.

The children in KS1 read the story of the Rainbow fish and learnt how sharing is a good way of making friends and also makes us feel happy.

Good News of Great Joy

Christmas is a time full of joy and generosity.

The children enjoy bringing in shoe boxes filled with gifts for Operation Christmas Child.

Have a look at this Veggie Tales clip that shows the delight of the children receiving shoe boxes.

We celebrate the greatest gift of all, God’s gift to us of Jesus. Last year the children in Reception put on a heart-melting Wriggly Nativity, Year 3 performed a wonderful Christmas play and there was a KS2 Carol Service.

Term 3

Caring and Compassion

During this term we learn about prayer and how it’s simply talking to God just like we would talk to a friend. Praying for others is one way we can show care and compassion.

We have been considering the following verses:

“Do not worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need and when you pray always give thanks. And God’s peace will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. The peace that God gives is so great that we cannot understand it.”

Philippians 4:6-7

There is now a prayer tree in the Family Link Room where children can write prayer requests on leaves.

Children from each class in the school contributed prayers, written on leaves, for the St Michael's Prayer Book. The Prayer Book is beautiful and vibrant with it's different coloured pages for each class and the highly decorated leaves. Prayers from the book are used in assemblies during the week.

There is a Prayer Box in school where children can put their prayer requests for themselves or someone they know who feels worried or sad. The prayer requests are taken out of the box and prayed for each week.

The Trinity

An extra topic for us this term is the Trinity which is beyond our understanding and something of a mystery. We have been seeking to begin to understand how God is one God and three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. We have been learning a song to help our understanding:

God is three in one

Three in one

Three in one

The Father makes all things

The Son sets us free

The Holy Spirit brings life to me.

You could ask your child to sing it for you!

Term 4

Friendship and Peace

This term the children in KS2 enjoy planning their own assemblies about friendship, they always have lots of great ideas. The activities the children chose were to help classmates consider how they can be good friends.

Easter

Year 5 worked hard learning lines, songs and dances for their Easter performance, which was enjoyed by children at school and parents at the St Michael's Church Centre.

Our Easter Garden

The scene changed daily as Jesus went from praying in the garden to the cross. He was then laid in the tomb but a few days later he rose again and was walking in the garden. The children enjoyed watching the story unfold.

Term 5

Humility

Jesus, the Servant King is been an inspiring topic as we have considered and learnt from the humble, caring and simple life of the King of kings. The children have learnt to have a healthy regard for themselves whilst not thinking they are better than anyone else. We have considered what we can do to help and serve others.

This term we have also learnt about Jesus' ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

The Friday Quiet Room

Children who want to be quiet, reflect, read, engage in a quiet activity or pray can come to the quiet room on Friday lunchtimes.

Term 6

Jesus, The Light of the World

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

Jesus is the light in this school, revealing God to us (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and showing us the way to live by his example and his teaching.

This terms topic of light will also include the encouragement to SHINE by being true to ourselves, reaching our potential and doing kind things for others.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

We will also consider how the Bible guides us and shows us the right way to go.

"Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119:105
